#TellHisStory: Letting Go of the Mama Guilt

June 26, 2013 | 6 comments

So here’s the thing —

My to-do list has tried to be the boss of me lately. Not only that, but that pushy list has thrown the Guilt Card in my face. The Guilt Card tells me: “You’re not a good Mom. This will be your girls’ WORST SUMMER EVER. They’ll only remember you by the back of your head, because your face was turned toward your computer screen.”

Sigh.

Well. I talked back to that bossy, brassy, know-it-all list of mine. And I cut myself some slack. I hope you can do the same. Because you’ve got to know this: You’re doing fine, Mom. You really are. And you love those kids, … yes, you do.

I’m telling a story about “work-life balance” today for parents, over at The High Calling, and I really hope you’ll join me over there.

So, what’s your Story? A #TellHisStory is any story that connects your story into the story of God.

Your words matter to God. They matter to people. And they matter to me!

Jennifer, this post was my whisper of grace from God today. Summer guilt can kill all the joy. Thank you.

    Dear Jennifer
Thanks, I needed this bit of honey today! With Fibromyalgia and CFS we cannot do to much in any case and believe me, that can put you quickly on a major guilt trip. I needed to learn that our Pappa is in control of my life and if He wanted me to be a very active busy bee, He would have given me the strength to do so as well.
    Much love xx

That was a good one. Guilt is a strange motivator. I spend half my time ignoring it and the other half making it my God.

Hi Jennifer, I love this post! I struggle with the same guilt. I too have been reading about work/life balance over at The High Calling this week. There is balance in your life. You are modeling that balance to your girls. That is important! You are always there to love and nurture your family…to enjoy family time as well as quiet, intimate moments. However, you also carve out time to serve the Lord through your writing. Your words have a positive impact on the lives of so many others. Don’t ever discount that. I think our society makes us believe that good Moms are playmates…always involved and interacting with their children. Actually, I recently learned that we are doing out children a disservice when we are overly involved. It is not our job to entertain our children…it is actually healthy from them to have quiet time and to think up creative ways to occupy their own time. You ARE a good Mom! Love you!
