Why I’m Not Reading Fifty Shades of Grey
A person can count a lot of things. Over the years, humankind has counted up:
50 ways to leave your lover;

and now, Fifty Shades of Grey.
I’m counting on one thing … this one thing only: I’m counting on God.
I will rest in the shade of One, not the shade of fifty.

But I have been asked to offer my opinion on this bestselling book, and my opinion is this: I have chosen not to read it. I have not heard of this book until a couple of weeks ago…actually my daughter was sharing her concerns over how many young(20’s 30’s) reading this book . I read Dannah post…it is very good. This just breaks my heart…such a counterfeit for all the beauty God intends.

I did not know of the book until I saw it at every grocery-store checkout in Sioux Falls. And then some friends asked me about it.
I followed the link. Hadn’t heard about this one. God convicted me many years ago to give up even daydreaming if it wasn’t about my husband because thoughts were sins, too. I’m in my marriage wholeheartedly. One truth. No gray here.

I am not reading it either…I saw Dannah’s post and read through some of the comments…mercy. There is nothing godly about that genre of books. Nothing at all.
I just recently heard about this book on the NBC Nightly News. Needless to say, I was shocked at the number of people they implied were reading it, had read it and wanted to read it. When I learned what was contained between its covers, I chose not to read it as well. I have many other good things to read, starting with the Bible, my fellow faith-filled blogging women’s posts, and devotionals. ‘Nuff said.
I, too, have chosen not to read the book. Your post reminds me of a lyric in a song by Kerri Roberts “Outcast” – “But I won’t be grey when it’s all black and white.” 🙂

Thanks Jennifer for passing along this link. I skimmed through the nearly 300 comments on Dannah’s article and was mildly upset but not really surprised at how many so-called Christians were upset by Dannah’s post and calling it and her judgmental. I have dealt with the life shattering effects of lust and pornography and have had God renew my purity by renewing my mind. Few immature Christians realize the battle for our minds when it comes to a book like this. Thanks again for sharing your view and linking us to Dannah’s post. 🙂
A few weeks ago my husband asked if I’d heard of this book because people were talking about it in his office. The title wasn’t familiar to me, but when I looked it up on amazon, I realized I’d seen the cover and not paid any attention to it. After reading the description, I still had no interest in it. I let him know what it was about, since he really didn’t know. I’m going over to read Dannah’s post now.

Checked out the link. Thank you Jennifer for your courage in speaking against such things. I have not read this book or any others like it. This book is ‘all the rage’ here in Canada as well. Even at grocery-store checkouts. It makes me sick, because I know the horrendous effects of pornography and uncontrolled lust. And these things are a huge part of the increase of evil in these last days. And the unsaved, and sadly many Christians, do not ‘get it’. They just think they’re being ‘entertained’. satan is having his heyday. And marriages are falling apart everywhere we look today. This world is becoming sex-saturated and promises to get more and moreso. We’ve got to wake up!!!
I have not read the book (or even heard of it) — BUT I agree whole-heartedly with your statement: ‘I will rest in the shade of One and not fifty.’
Whether it’s a godly thing to read or not, sometimes we must say “no” to even the good to make room for the Best.
And this reaches into just every part of life.

Never heard of the book.
But I’ve heard of The Book.
And I’ll choose the shade of my Beloved. Scoot over, Lynn. 🙂
Tonight I flew out of a SMALL airport in CA. My 16 year old son pointed out that 3 women getting on our plane were reading 50 Shades and then we got on the plane we saw another one. 4 out of 60 women in our line of site were reading it, I’ve never seen anything like it. I told my son about it being called “Mommy Porn” and how women would be screaming if our men were just openly reading and sharing a little “Daddy Porn.” It really struck something with him.
Based on the recommendation from my 72 year old MIL, I read the book before I knew anything about it. I do not judge the women we saw tonight, but see it as an opportunity to pray against the pervasive culture crushing we all can easily fall prey to. Let’s lift up our sisters and stand in the gap for them.
