Whatsoever Things
Here’s my take on the verses from Philippians 4:8:
WHATSOEVER THINGS
Whatsoever things are true
The new year is in view
I pray that You cut through
To turn the old to new
And with Your love imbue
my heart, which longs for You.
Whatsoever things are honest
Before You I’ve confessed
my pride, my lack of rest
I’m honestly a mess
Too worried and distressed
Yet still I have been blessed
You’re fair, and full of trust
Though I have been unjust
(Just like we have discussed)
You are “I AM” … The Just.
Whatsoever things are pure
Though I feign as one mature
Inside, I am unsure
And You … You reassure
An eternity, secure
My path or Your detour?
Whatsoever things are lovely
What could I give to Thee?
The Holy Trinity
My life, my family
Was blind, but now I see
Whatsoever things are of good report
Even when I come up short,
Thy hands give sure support,
I make you “Last Resort.”
Yet you defend me in your court!
If there be any virtue, and if there be any praise,
(It is you alone who hold my days)
There are no greater queens or kings,
For You alone my heart now sings,
Let hearts take flight on eagles’ wings!
Yes, I shall think upon these things.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. — Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

This post was inspired by a challenge by the guys over at Red Letter Believers to consider the blessings of 2008. I am not a poet, but I felt moved to share in this way. What a blessing it was to think about the “Philippians 4:8 Things” in my life.

Tell me, dear one, what will you dwell on in the coming year?
I don’t know about you – but I am thankful that my Pi Phi days required me to memorize that verse! It is a rock to come back to when my thoughts wander to things it shouldn’t dwell on… a friend of mine uses that verse to ground herself also… “what is true in this situation?” etc.
As for me – I was challenged by John Piper in his recent sermon post (http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/Sermons/ByDate/2008/3468_Put_in_the_Fire_for_the_Sake_of_Prayer/) to consider my prayer life this year… not just prayer on my own – but prayer with fellow believers…
and not only prayer – but to consider the trials of my life pure joy – knowing that they were allowed for the maturing of my faith… (James 1)
Praying for you and your family as you take this journey into the unknown with Paul’s health… let us have eternal perspective for His glory!

Wonder! Nicely written. I enjoyed reading that.
My hope is to dwell on that which the Lord calls me to. If I had to choose, I would say: deepening my faith; my sweet hubby; my neighborhood ministry through my church; my writing. It’s all for God anyway.
But, if He pulls my focus elsewhere, I will surely oblige.

That was a great veiw from your perspective of Philippians 4:8; very poetic and very lovely. I enjoyed reading it so much. You, Billy, and Travis are very talented with your writing skills.
