First of us, let’s just acknowledge that some mornings feel like a sunrise in your soul, bright and joyful. But other mornings? They can feel like an unwelcome fog.

Maybe you woke up tired, heavy-hearted, or already overwhelmed by everything waiting for you outside the bedroom door.

If that’s you, I want to tell you something simple and true:

God is already in your morning.

And His Word has something to say about the emotions you’re carrying into it.

How I Began to Use Morning Scriptures to Start the Day

As a young mom, I started reading morning Scriptures to start my day, and then I started speaking those verses over my life, my home, my family, and my mind. In that season, I often woke up overwhelmed by chaos. “Quiet time” was anything but quiet with little kids. I was emotionally worn out and physically tired — but I still had to show up for my family, my work, and my people.

I remember when an older woman told me that I didn’t need to spend hours in the Scriptures for it to count. She told me that meditating on one or two verses could make a tremendous difference.

It was quality, not quantity, that mattered most.

That was exactly what I needed to hear during a time when I was truly pressed for time.

But I didn’t know where to start, given my anxiety at the time, so this woman recommended I start with Philippians 4:6–7, which reminds us to pray when we’re experiencing anxious thoughts.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

So that’s exactly what I did. Standing at the coffee pot one morning, I read and pondered those verses. And they felt like oxygen to my soul.

That’s when I started writing verses on a set of notecards in my kitchen. Many of those verses became such an important part of my mornings, that I memorized them.

Now, I’m sharing some of those verses with you.

Whether you feel anxious, sad, tired, or just unsure how to start the day, Scripture gives us language to pray, process, and speak truth out loud.
