#TellHisStory: What To Do When Compliments Scare You

June 24, 2014 | 1 comment

It can take a long time for a woman to figure out how to take a compliment.

You might go a whole lifetime thinking it’s plain wrong to say “thank you” when someone says you make the best pie crust, smile the sweetest smile, pen the loveliest little poems.

Your mama taught you to say thank you, clear back when you were shyly hiding behind her knees. But then you grew up and learned about God’s glory, and you got to worrying that you were stealing some of His praise with your wee little thank you.

So you stop saying thank you, and you start telling them they’re wrong.

Funny thing is, I enjoy giving compliments. A God-made encourager, I love to find the best in people, and then tell them what I see.

But I’ve done a poor job of receiving kind words in return. I’ve been allergic to compliments – partly because I didn’t think I deserved them, and partly because I didn’t know how to respond.

Then, I met a woman –

Question for you:

What are you most inclined to do when someone tells you they like your hair, that touching blog post you wrote, those brownies from a box that you baked for the church potluck, or the morning devotions that you delivered even though it scared you out of your ever-lovin’ mind? Is accepting a compliment hard for you?

So, what’s your Story?

A #TellHisStory is any story that connects your story into the story of God.

You’re invited to tell that story right here, in community with us.

Share your narratives, your poems, your Instagrams tagged with #TellHisStory, … your beautiful hearts. You are the chroniclers, the people who help others make sense of the world with your words and your art.

Story is how we know that, no matter what happens, we can get back up again.

Visit someone (or two) in the link-up to encourage with a comment. Then, Tweet about your posts, and the posts you visit, with the #TellHisStory hashtag. Come back on Friday to visit our Featured #TellHisStory, in the sidebar.

A final note: This is a safe place to tell your stories. You don’t have to be a professional writer to join us. Story is built into every single one of us. Your story matters, because it’s part of God’s story down through history, not because you punctuated everything correctly. Deal?

Great thoughts, Jennifer. I do find myself “thanking” on my blog when others compliment my writing or drawing… I think because I do believe as you say, that it really is honoring God and how he moves in and through us. Still, at the same time, I always feel awkward about how I word that “thank you” – mostly because I’m worrying about how others who are reading my response may interpret those words. Will they think I’m being pompous? Will they think it is all about thank yous? Back to worrying what others think too much…. I also think of how God led me to share Him with someone by first deeply encouraging that person to know how much they had touched me in their gifts throughout my life, and how God really does want us to honor others that way. It isn’t a pride thing, but an encouraging word… That person opened up to listening because he knew I cared about his life… So valuable that we give and receive thanks! ~ Pam, apples of gold, http://wordglow.wordpress.com
